How to Get More Useful Summaries From AI
“Summarize this” is easy to ask and surprisingly difficult to do well. A useful summary depends on what you need from the source.
Choose the purpose first
A study summary, executive brief and fact-checking summary are different tasks. Tell the assistant why you need the summary.
Specify what to preserve
You may want key arguments, decisions, numbers, examples, risks or unresolved questions. Naming these elements is more reliable than asking for a generic summary.
Preserve uncertainty
For important documents, ask the AI to distinguish between what the source explicitly states and what it infers. This is especially useful when the source contains ambiguous language.
Use a two-pass method
First ask for a structured extraction. Then ask for a shorter summary based only on that extraction. You can also compare the final summary against the original document.
### Example prompt
Summarize this document for [audience]. Preserve the main claims, important numbers, decisions and unresolved questions. Do not add facts that are not in the source. Mark anything ambiguous as uncertain.
The goal is not the shortest possible summary. It is a summary that preserves the information you actually need.
