A Practical AI Fact-Checking Workflow

Practical AI guide · Editorial content

AI can help organize a fact-checking process, but it should not be treated as the final authority on whether a claim is true.

Break claims into individual statements

A paragraph may contain several claims. Separate them so each one can be checked independently.

Identify what evidence would settle the claim

For each statement, ask what kind of source would be appropriate: an official document, primary research, a company filing, a government publication or another authoritative source.

Keep a source trail

Record where each important fact came from. If an AI assistant gives you a citation, open the source and verify that it actually supports the claim.

Be careful with dates

A claim can be accurate in one year and wrong in another. Always check the publication date and the date the claim refers to.

### A useful instruction

Extract each factual claim from this text. For each claim, state what evidence would be needed to verify it. Do not decide that a claim is true merely because it sounds plausible.

AI is excellent at structuring the work. The evidence still has to do the convincing.
